Film 2009

January 31, 2010 at 13:31 (Film)

Looking back over all the films I saw last year I’ve come to realise once again how subjective the whole rating system is. I thought I liked Star Trek and The Men Who Stare At Goats more than my score would suggest and Avatar, Benjamin Button and Slumdog Millionaire a lot less. The 5 star film is supposed to be a rare thing and I was surprised by the three films I gave my highest score to. I saw both Summer and Heavy Load at Keswick Film Festival and there’s no doubt that the festival atmosphere added to the experience, especially in the case of Heavy Load where the band introduced the film and did a gig afterwards. (500) Days Of Summer still remains the only film I saw all year which didn’t leave me disappointed in some way, for me the whole film was a complete joy but I suspect I won’t rate it as highly on a second viewing.

Top 5 Disappointments

I liked all of these films but I expected more from the directors, perhaps it was the high expectations that lead to the disappointment and I’ll appreciate them more on a second viewing.  In no particular order:

  • Slumdog Millionaire
  • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
  • Fish Tank
  • Inglorious Basterds
  • The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Top 5 Films

It may seem strange that my top 5 doesn’t contain all those films that scored 5/5 earlier in the year but time does strange things like that.

  • (500) Days Of Summer
  • Mesrine (Parts 1 & 2)
  • In The Loop
  • An Education
  • Moon

and honourable mentions to

Where The Wild Things Are, Adventureland, Up, Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee, The Hurt Locker, Let The Right One In, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Rachel Getting Married, Anvil! and The Wrestler
