Skins

In many ways it seems a shame that Skins is coming to an end but then again it’s hardly a huge surprise. In theory starting afresh every two years should have meant the series could have lived on for much longer. Instead each set of characters were pushed further than the last meaning there wasn’t really anywhere left to go.

I’ve not come up with a word for each new set of characters (generation, reboot…?) but both times they all seem weak, stereotypical and uninteresting but then throughout their first series you get to know them better and I’ve always made a connection with one of them. Unfortunately the second series often goes awry in strange and disappointing things. I still don’t understand how the writers managed to get Frankie so out of character in her second series episode.

The adults have always been a great part of Skins, even if it was strange seeing Her as a mother of a 14 year old girl. Perhaps that’s part of the reason why Skins has always appealed to an adult audience as well as the target audience, or were the adults always the target?

It’s interesting to know that there will only be one more series. It would be odd to introduce a new set of characters so I’m really hoping we get to revisit some familiar, now older, faces. I always thought there should have been more overlap between the different groups and having a final mash up could be great.
