The Last Guardian

Every review of The Last Guardian suggests that the game is a balancing act where the joy of the relationship between the boy and the creature is strong enough to overlook the many technical flaws, unfortunately for me the scales were too far tipped the other way. I wanted to like this game, I fought (and that feels like the right word) through until the end hoping it could convert me but I just got more and more frustrated and the dismal ending to an already weak story did nothing to change that either. Most of the other people’s complaints are about not getting the creature to do what you want but I rarely had any issues with this, it’s the one part of the game that did work for me. Practically everything else annoyed me: the camera, the controls, the bugs, the dull interior environments, the confusing exteriors, button mashing as a control mechanism, 12+ hours and I’m still not sure how to drop down from a ledge or jump from a rope. I never felt like I knew what I was supposed to be doing next, I never had any motivation to do anything. So much of the game is little more than a cut scene, jump on the creature’s back and see where he(?) takes you.

A big disappointment and has put me off trying Shadow Of The Colossus now.

Super Mario Odysesy

I pre-ordered this before realising I wouldn’t have time to play it until weeks after the release. In that time I saw lots of feedback about how great the game was so it was perhaps inevitable that (slight) disappointment would follow when I first started playing. It wasn’t until I got to the end of the New Donk City that the game truly impressed me with a magnificent sequence that is full of joy. It didn’t help that I somehow completely missed the T-Rex early in the game although I did find one later but only as a result of fumbling the controls and ending up somewhere I wasn’t trying to get to. It’s those controls and to a lesser extent the camera that marred my early hours with the game. I expect more from Nintendo, I don’t want to feel let down by the controls or be unsure exactly where I should be heading and certainly not miss an epic set piece. As I continued through the game, it never felt like a slog but it did feel a bit like going through the motions, albeit with a smile on my face. Those moments of pure joy did pop up from time to time but not enough to be fully impressed. This already didn’t feel as memorable as the Galaxy games or even Sunshine not to mention 64.

I tried not to read too much about the game but I was already aware that things may not be exactly as they seem. Throughout there is a sense that something else is being teased and as I approached Bowser’s Castle my hopes were raised. I don’t really think it’s a spoiler (but others have so feel free to skip ahead) to say that the 10ish hour story is really just a really long tutorial for the real game and it’s only once that starts that, for me, the game really came alive.  I’m not far into that stage of the game but already I feel the desire to play more which I didn’t have before. It is filling me with joy to play and also to marvel at how well the levels are put together which I didn’t appreciate as I was being funneled through the story. The funny thing is this is how I’ve said games should be designed, a brief story to introduce you to the world and mechanics but then an open world to explore and enjoy fully.

I have no idea how much more of the game I’ll play, it feels like there is a lot to see and a desire to do so but this felt like the right time to say something about it before I forget (like I did with Breath Of The Wild and possibly Tomb Raider).

Little Nightmares

It’s a while since I finished playing Little Nightmares and I can’t remember what I was going to say but in attempting to write about all the games I play* I thought I’d write something. I played this straight after Resident Evil 7 and this smaller game is far more effective; it’s creepier, more engaging and just a lot better. There are flaws, most notably a control scheme seems to require you to contort your fingers across several buttons to perform simple actions. Not mastering the controls means a lot of death and restarts and this is frustrating but not as much as RE7 and here there is a drive to carry on. I was captured by the look of Little Nightmares when I first saw it and it really does seem like this is the main feature of the game. The art style is so fantastic that I wanted to see what was next, I didn’t mind the setbacks or the simple puzzles (nor the few obscure ones), or never being entirely sure what to do (run or hide – a similar problem to RE7). It felt like it was the right length as well (not sure how long I played it for), leaving me satisfied without ever feeling like there was too much filler as with most games. It may not have always been fun to play but it was still a great experience.

Resident Evil 7

I was impressed by the demo and positive reviews and wanted to give the full game a go. The only problem was that it was now spring and I wanted to play in the dark. So I waited until September when it started to get dark earlier and finally got stuck in. At first I wondered if I’d made a mistake playing in the dark, the game was genuinely creepy and perhaps I did need the light on after all.

The opening sections of the game where you are restricted to the same locations as the demo continued to impress but once you are properly ‘introduced’ to the family things go wrong and not just in the story but the entire game. The more I played the more I got annoyed and more than once wondered if I should just quit, but it’s not a long game (apparently 10-15 hours is considered short) so I persevered. The good parts of the game are done extremely well: exploring the locations, trying to figure out what is going on, feeling a sense of dread from a realistic threat. It’s not long before that realistic threat becomes stupid overblown science-fiction/horror nonsense and that’s when the game starts to fall a part. The story makes little sense, seemingly shoehorning in a plot to loosely tie it to the rest of the series. There’s an inconsistency to encounters where you’re never quite sure if this is a stealth moment or unload all your ammo and hope for the best. The boss sections, like practically all boss sections, are tedious drawn out affairs that feel like they just get in the way of the rest of the game. Later in the game you’re asked to make an important choice but one of the characters is so underwritten I was barely sure who she was and her connection to the main character seemed tenuous at best.

I’ve found that once you realise that you’re not fully on board with something all the small niggles really stand out as well. Poor inventory management is perhaps part of the series. Your character has a torch but hardly ever uses it, even though a lot of the game is in the dark and it’s too difficult to make things out. The videotape sections make sense initially but who’s supposed to be filming the later ones? There were more things that annoyed me but thankfully I’ve forgotten those now.

Games 2016

In 2016 I was going to try and write about all the games I played. I managed this for a while but then got stuck not quite finishing things, forgetting or just running out of time.

Here in chronological order are all the games I spend a significant amount of time with. I ‘finished’ all of them apart from The Witness which I’m still playing (but extremely slowly and there’s no way I’ll be able to remember all the rules to ever finish it).

I’d say all of these are excellent apart from Among The Sleep, Arkham Knight and the Lego Demos. I’ve probably forgotten something, don’t think I played any mobile games apart from Pokemon Go!.

Without wanting to get into the “not a game” debate I’m not sure how else you could describe Flower. It is just a beautiful experience that was only really let down by the motion controls occasionally contorting my body into an unusual position. Nice to play a game for a few hours, get plenty from it and know I could (but won’t) go back to find more secrets or just to be carried along by the wind.

Demo Roundup PS4

I decided I didn’t have time to get stuck into another game this month even though I really want to play the re-release of Twilight Princess and The Witness. I did think I had time to play through a few demos. First up were the two (latest?) Lego games The Force Awakens and Avengers. Both were fun but even I’m now starting to feel like I’ve had enough of these now. The Force Awakens felt far too clutter and in the shooting and flying sections I often couldn’t tell what was going on. I think I enjoyed The Avengers more even though a bug at the end prevented me from finishing the demo but I’d seen enough.

Much more enjoyable was Unravel, when I first saw this it looked so beautiful and I was intrigued by the mechanics of controlling a character made from yarn. Indeed the game is one of the best looking I’ve seen (perhaps Uncharted 4 is as good) and there is a lovely atmosphere to the game. I enjoyed all the mechanics in the game and, as a demo should, it left me wanting more. I was tempted to purchase the full game and carry on but trying to be more strict about playing what I’ve already bought first. It’s a shame to glance at reviews and see them suggest that it becomes repetitive or the mechanics start to be inconsistent or not make sense but I’m ready for more before I lose interest.

Arkham Knight

I think it’s fair to say I hated Arkham Knight but with a huge caveat of I also really enjoyed it. This was the first game of this generation in which I had any interest but so-so reviews weren’t enough to make me purchase hardware. When Arkham Knight picked up the Best Game Bafta it felt like a good time to give it a go. By the time my end credits rolled I thought it was embarrassing that this game had won the BAFTA. I didn’t take to the game at all and certainly not as much as any of the other games in the series including Origins. The controls have been mangled so so actions learned over three other games now open pointless menus and makes it so much harder to do simple things like switching gadgets so they just don’t get used. Another button quickly calls the Batmobile which is also something you’ll hardly ever want to do because that is another huge problem with the game. Perhaps it’s because I don’t like driving games but everything about it feels wrong and doesn’t feel like Batman. Any Batmobile section brings the game to a grinding halt and destroys any momentum and forgiveness of other flaws that may have developed.

The story is another big problem. I didn’t like it, it’s uninteresting and didn’t make much sense and was full of pointless and obvious twists. It always felt like it was the story that was getting in the way of the game an idea that was only solidified after probably spending as much time in the game after completing the story. Because when it boils down to what the game actually is, it is still great fun. It’s great to be Batman, everything about the other games is still great here. It just gets interrupted by a car chase, race or shoot out. I did keep coming back for more, it’s unlikely I’ll get to 100% but it felt like it was worth working towards it and again apart from the Batmobile sections (apart from the Riddler trophies the only other part I’ve yet to complete are the mines) they are more fun than the story. It made me realise that nearly every open world game has it the wrong way around and it’s all the smaller side quests that should be the focus. A story could come along and interrupt things and that would make much more sense. The Riddler’s presence is much more prominent than any of the other villains in the game and that should have been the focus. As you’re trying to sort him out other “plot” could happen around you. I thought the same thing about other games such as Tomb Raider where exploring and collecting trinkets was more enjoyable than the story. It’s something I hope the new Zelda game will get right.

So a love/hate relationship. The mechanics (once you get over the dodgy controls and stop opening menus) are hugely enjoyable and the reason why I kept coming back. Definitely more fun once the story was out of the way and the Batmobile was never required.

Firewatch has one of the best openings of any game, it reminded me a lot of the start of Up! and it is just as emotional. Once the game started properly I had some issues getting familiar with the controls, this isn’t unusual for me but something here wasn’t quite right. It’s never a huge issue but more than once I missed a piece of conversation or selected the wrong option by pressing the wrong button. The control issues did stop me loving the game the way I thought and hoped I would from the start though. I did end up enjoying the experience though. It’s a shame there isn’t more to do or at least more time to explore, at one point a day ended when I was in the middle of something else which was both jarring and annoying. I played through in three “movie length” sessions so it probably was around 6 hours. The story is well told and has a really satisfying conclusion but at places wish there was more depth.  I’ve realised there is a problem in that I can’t really remember any of the detail (it’s a month later) but perhaps that just means I should find time to play through again.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War

I’d known about Valiant Hearts for a while but didn’t realise it came out back in 2014, I only caught up with it this year when it was heavily discounted in the sales. It’s a remarkable game, simplistic in it’s gameplay but full of depth when it comes to the portrayal of war. Perhaps it’s surprising that something that looks the way this does should feel so authentic but it captured something that so few other things have managed. There are several moments in the game when bombs are being dropped or your characters are under heavy fire and it isn’t clear what you should do; do you just run for it, hold back, step out of the way. It was these moments that really made me feel the hopelessness of war, it’s usually a terrible game mechanic to make progress through trial and error but here it just added poignancy.

The whole game is beautifully designed and looks fantastic. Rather than strive for photorealistic graphics I never understood why developers didn’t aim for interactive cartoons like this. The digging animation is the only weak part but I assume that was made intentionally shonky by design. If there are other problems then my hopelessness with names meant I struggled to completely follow the story (even though I played through it over a short period), it’s a shame because this could have been avoided if the diaries had pictures of the characters or there was some other place to see their names. The historical facts are an interesting addition but the use of actual photos doesn’t sit well with the rest of the stylised world but does add some authenticity to what you are seeing.

A beautiful, moving and educational experience that would also be suitable for people who don’t normally play games.
